When Americans were on there way to Europe, none of the troop ships were sunk, thanks to Admiral William S. Sims. The British preferred to fight the German submarines, so they would send their war ships to find them, while the merchant ships raced accros the Alantic individually. This gave the German submarines to inflict heavy losses on Brittish shipping. So Simms perposed that they would travel in convoys. Small maneuverable warships called destroyers would protect and escort the convoys across the Atlantic. Convoys also saved lives, because if one ship was destroyed then another ship on the convoy can save the survivors.
